(CS4U) Leadership Promises - Leadership and the Fruit of the Spirit

Leadership and the Fruit of the Spirit

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.                  Galatians 5:22-23

Probably the most memorable verses in Galatians are those that list the "fruit of the Spirit." Fruit grows from planted seeds. Every leader should embrace this marvelous list of inward qualities. Evaluate yourself against them:

  • Love - Is my leadership motivated by love for people?
  • Joy - Do I exhibit an unshakable joy, regardless of life's circumstances?
  • Peace - Do people see my peace and take courage?
  • Longsuffering - Do I wait patiently for results as I develop people or goals?
  • Kindness - Am I caring and understanding toward everyone I meet?
  • Goodness - Do I want the best for others and the organization?
  • Faithfulness - Have I kept my commitments?
  • Gentleness - Is my strength under control? Can I be both tough and tender?
  • Self-Control - Am I disciplined to make progress toward my goals?

Sweet Sleep
When day is done and you lie down to sleep, do you rest serenely? Do the experiences of the day pass through your mind, or tomorrow's unknowns cause you distress?
In peace I will both lie down and sleep; for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety.
Psalm 4:8
What can change that? The Old Testament speaks of peace as prosperity, health and fulfillment, but it also talks of wholeness and harmony based on relationship. The absence of strife (peace) is found only through the presence of God. David says that "the Lord has set apart the godly" and hears when you call to Him. He tells you to "ponder in your own hearts on your beds, and be silent." (Psalm 4:3-4) David took refuge in that. You, too, can be fully aware of God's presence and His willingness and ability to answer your prayers.
Your difficult circumstances, dangers you encounter, or illnesses may not go away. But you can have the confidence of David. Unrest and instability in the nation affect its leaders. Military forces around the world face threats every day. Pray for them. Put your trust in the Lord. Let your inner turmoil be quieted. Then close your eyes and enjoy the sweet sleep only God can give.

Preaching the Word
November 8, 2010

"Therefore they that were scattered abroad went every where preaching the word." (Acts 8:4)

Every believer has been called to preach God's Word, not just pastors of churches. When Christ gave the Great Commission to "preach the gospel to every creature" (Mark 16:15), it was clear that this could be accomplished only if every Christian would actually preach the gospel!

This was practiced first by the members of the church at Jerusalem. Then, when the believers were "all scattered abroad . . . except the apostles" (Acts 8:1), these "laymen" went everywhere preaching the Word. One of the "deacons" selected to relieve the apostles of the "business" affairs of the church was Philip, and he "went down to the city of Samaria, and preached Christ unto them" (Acts 8:5), speaking to great crowds and winning many to Christ. Then shortly afterward, the Lord called him down to Gaza where he met an Ethiopian eunuch, and he "preached unto him Jesus" (Acts 8:35). This teaches plainly that one can preach to a large congregation, but he or she can also preach to one person. It is not the size of the congregation but the theme of the message that makes one a preacher of the Word!

Furthermore, it is not only by word of mouth that Christ is preached; Paul says that "the gospel . . . was preached to every creature |literally, 'in every creation'| which is under heaven" (Colossians 1:23). "And how shall they hear without a preacher? . . . But I say, Have they not heard? Yes verily, their sound went into all the earth, and their words unto the ends of the world" (Romans 10:14, 18). One can preach verbally to a congregation or to an unseen audience through radio or in writing to a reader, and even a godly lifestyle can "preach" effectively (although not specifically) of the saving work of Christ. Even the heavens declare His glory, and every believer must preach the Word! HMM

(CS4U) Leadership Promises - Lifting the Lid

Lifting the Lid

"Also, in time past, when Saul was king over us, you were the one who led Israel out and brought them in; and the Lord said to you, 'You shall shepherd
My people Israel, and be ruler over Israel'."  2 Samuel 5:2

Why did Saul fail as Israel's king, while David succeeded? The answer can be found in the Law of the Lid. Leadership ability is the lid that determines a person's level of effectiveness. And to reach the highest level of effectiveness, you have to raise the lid on your leadership ability.

David had many lids on his life, but they did not stop him:

1. His family
2. His leader
3. His background
4. His youthfulness and inexperience

Ultimately David became a great leader - yet not because he lacked limitations in life. He achieved much because he became a lid lifter.

Every leader has lids on his life; nobody is born without them. And they don't disappear when a person receives a title, achieves a position, or gets invested with power. The issue is not whether you have lids, but what you are going to do about them.
