A Clear Conscience

January 8, 2011

Play MP3
Our Daily Bread is hosted by Les Lamborn

READ: 1 John 1

I myself always strive to have a conscience without offense toward God and men. —Acts 24:16

After Ffyona Campbell became famous as the first woman to walk around the world, her joy was short-lived. Despite the adulation she received, something troubled her. Guilt overtook her and pushed her to the brink of a nervous breakdown.

What was bothering her? "I shouldn't be remembered as the first woman to walk around the world," she finally admitted. "I cheated." During her worldwide trek, she broke the guidelines of the Guinness Book of World Records by riding in a truck part of the way. To clear her conscience, she called her sponsor and confessed her deception.

God has given each of us a conscience that brings guilt when we do wrong. In Romans, Paul describes our conscience as "accusing or else excusing [us]" (2:15). For the obedient follower of Christ, care of the conscience is an important way of maintaining a moral compass despite moral imperfection. Confessing sin, turning from it, and making restitution should be a way of life (1 John 1:9; Lev. 6:2-5).

Paul modeled a well-maintained conscience, saying, "I strive always to keep my conscience clear before God and man" (Acts 24:16 NIV). Through confession and repentance, he kept short accounts with God. Is sin bothering you? Follow Paul's example. Strive for a clear conscience. —Dennis Fisher

There is a treasure you can own
That's greater than a crown or throne:
This treasure is a conscience clear
That brings the sweetest peace and cheer. —Isenhour

If God's Word guides your conscience, let your conscience be your guide.

(CS4U) No internet at home

Living with no internet at home, and loving it.
Lost my IP address, and can't seem to troubleshoot on my own.
Can't afford to pay anyone to come over and do it.
So I will not get it.
Decided it's time to get my house in order.  So no internet allowed
in my home until my house is clean, all my shelves are up and books
are organized.  All paperwork sorted and organized.  all rooms
clean.
that's a tall order!
Will check in weekly at my mom's computer, or my daughters, or
at library.
Hope everyone is well.

Grandpa, John Milton "Mick" Werner, passed away about 7:30 this morning at the age of 91.
Survived by his wife, 2 children, 5 grandchildren, and 12 or more great-grandchildren (I've lost count).
I do not have details right now other than this:
Funeral will be in Helena, OK at the First Baptist Church, which his grandfather founded and pastored, then his father pastored, then he was a deacon for many years.

(CS4U) Leadership Promises - The Blame Game

January 8

The Blame Game
The man said, "The woman whom You gave to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I ate." Genesis 3:12

When things go wrong, the natural tendency is to look for someone to blame. You can go all the way back to the Garden of Eden on this one. When God asked Adam what he'd done, he said it was Eve's fault. Then when God questioned Eve, she blamed it on the snake. The same thing happens today.

The next time you experience a failure, think about why you failed instead of who was at fault. Try to look at it objectively so that you can do better next time. Ask yourself: What lessons have I learned? How can I turn the failure into success? Where did I succeed as well as fail?

People who blame others for their failures never overcome them. They simply move from problem to problem. To reach your potential, you must continually improve yourself, and you can't do that if you don't take responsibility for your actions and learn from your mistakes.

(CS4U) Leadership Promises - Be Careful Where You Get Your Counsel

January 7

Be Careful Where You Get Your Counsel

Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stands in the path of sinners, nor sits in the seat of the scornful; But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and in His law he meditates day and night. He shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that brings forth its fruit in its season, whose leaf also shall not wither; And whatever he does shall prosper. Psalm 1:1-3

The brilliant first psalm contrasts the righteous and the wicked. Leaders, take note because the difference between the two seems to be where they get their counsel!

Observe how a foolish leader can be led astray by a corrupt inner circle:
1. The leader begins to browse for the wrong counsel.
2. The leader begins to listen to the wrong voices.
3. The leader joins the wrong inner circle.

A wise leader meditates on God's Word day and night. Note the results of receiving counsel from the right inner circle:
1. Stability
2. Inward nourishment and refreshment
3. Fruitfulness and productivity
4. Strength and durability
5. Success

What Do You Do?

By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples.
John 15:8

Recommended Reading
1 Corinthians 15:58

Question: What is (probably) the most-often asked question at parties and the church's fellowships when strangers meet?

Answer: "So, what do you do?"

Asking about a person's vocation or job is definitely a time-tested ice-breaker, good for a couple minutes of chit-chat--double that amount if the question is reciprocated: "And what do you do?"

Actually, every Christian could answer the question with the exact same template: "I serve the Lord Jesus Christ by working as a (name your vocation or job)." As slaves of Jesus Christ (Romans 1:1), we really have only one job in life: to serve Him. We go to many different venues for our vocation, but it is ultimately Him we serve. As Christ came into the world to accomplish His Father's will (John 6:38), so we go into the world to accomplish Christ's will (Matthew 28:19-20; John 20:21). We accomplish two things in doing so: We earn our daily bread through our labor and we extend the kingdom of God by manifesting Christ's life and values to others.

So, what do you do? And how can you serve Christ today through your vocation or calling?

He who disregards his calling will never keep the straight path in the duties of his work.
John Calvin
