Jannai was the son of Joseph. Joseph was the son of Mattathias. Mattathias was the son of Amos. Amos was the son of Nahum. Nahum was the son of Esli. Esli was the son of Naggai. Naggai was the son of Maath. Maath was the son of Mattathias. Mattathias was the son of Semein. Semein was the son of Josech. Josech was the son of Joda. Joda was the son of Joanan. Joanan was the son of Rhesa. Rhesa was the son of Zerubbabel. Zerubbabel was the son of Shealtiel. Shealtiel was the son of Neri. Neri was the son of Melchi. Melchi was the son of Addi. Enos was the son of Seth. Seth was the son of Adam. Adam was the son of God. -- Luke 3:23-38 (ERV) KEY THOUGHT: Names. People. Ancestors. Stories. Connections. Faith. History. Faithfulness. Promise. God. These are more than mere names. They are a reminder that Jesus comes to us as part of God's promise to redeem and bless the world through Israel. They are also a reminder of a long line of faith and hundreds of stories of faith that brought us Jesus. They are the reassurance that God is faithful to keep his promises and bring salvation to his people. So when our nights seem darkest and hopes seem most distant, this list of names can be our reminder that God doesn't tire or need to sleep. He doesn't forget his promises. He will do what he has promised. How do we know? He has done it for generations. And even in those moments when we can't see his hand at work in our world, he is working to bring about salvation for those who love him. TODAY'S PRAYER: Father, give me a heart of faith as deep and as long as the line of faith that has been passed down to me through the ages. In Jesus' name I pray.
