One Good Turn
He was known as "the nation's most trusted person," and when Walter Cronkite went on the air on February 27, 1968 to deliver his opinion about the war in Vietnam, many people were listening. Cronkite's view was that the conflict was deadlocked with no prospect of victory. On hearing the popular newsman's views, President Lyndon Johnson was crestfallen. "If I've lost Cronkite," he reportedly lamented, "I've lost middle America." Two months later, a demoralized Johnson announced that he would not run for re-election.
Turn, O Lord, deliver my life; save me for the sake of your steadfast love.
Psalm 6:4
Far worse than the feeling of having voters turn against you is the feeling that God has. Of course, that can never happen for a Christian but, as David lamented in the Psalms, it can sometimes seem that way. Even though David called out for the Lord to "turn" back to him, he soon realized and acknowledged that God was right there all the time.
What a joy - and what a relief - it is to know that you are never beyond the reach of His steadfast love. If you feel dejected, you're just one good turn away from deliverance. Today, ask God to make his presence known in your heart ... and in your nation.
