Good Riddance 2010! "Thank goodness, it's over!" I've heard this line from many friends.
It was a tough and tumultuous year. Unemployment was around 10%. A 7.0 magnitude earthquake hit Haiti. Oil spill. Politics. A recession that has lingering effects. A volcano that shut down the airlines. Snow storms that stopped holiday travel to friends and loved ones.
One of the bright spots of 2010 was the rescue of the Chilean miners. We prayed, we hoped, we cheered. After 69 days underground the 33 miners came to the surface one by one. It was a feel-good story made special by the warmth and comradeship the miners had for each other.
It was a reminder to us that one of the most important stories of 2010 - and of 2011 - is love and friendship. These are God's gifts to us as we go through hardship and trouble. The Lord wants us to have companionship.
Friendship is one of two loves mentioned in the Bible. It is known as "brotherly love," and refers to the affection for family and friends and the activities we enjoy.
Click here to find out more now. The other love mentioned in the Scripture - one of 4 kinds of love in the ancient Greek vocabulary - is
agape. It is used in a special way in the New Testament. In Ancient Greek,
agape was used for a general affection for people or things. But in the Bible, it took on a new meaning. Download the free Bible eChart for a description of these four loves.
This special use of
Agape revolutionized the concept of love so dramatically, it had to be defined for people in the Early Church. They wanted to know: What is it? What isn't it?
The 14-panel pamphlet
Dare to Love goes further than the free Bible eChart. It takes us on a voyage to understand what
agape love is and how it is different and better than any other love we know.
