Being a Doer and Not a Talker

 

"And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Son may bring glory to the Father. You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it."
John 14:13-14

 

Several years ago Nike introduced a memorable slogan for its athletic brands: JUST DO IT. What could be simpler than those three words? Don't daydream about it. Don't talk about it. Just Do It!

The same slogan applies to the Christian life. James 1:22-25 puts it this way: "Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. But the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it - he will be blessed in what he does."

When it comes to showing God's love to others, there are thousands of ways to "just do it." If you know someone who needs encouragement, write them an uplifting note. Tell them what you admire about them. Let God's love pour out from your words as you write them, email them or text them. If you know someone who needs a helping hand, cross the street and lend them a hand. If you know someone who needs a listening ear, get away from distractions and give them your full attention. Share the gospel of Christ through your actions.

A mentor once shared this with me, "Between what is said and what is done, there is a lot more said than done." He is right. We can talk all day about people's needs without making the smallest difference in their lives. But one purposeful action, one physical intervention into a person's life, can be transforming.

 

Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father, You have place people all around me that need to know You, that need to experience Your love and compassion. You tell me to ask in the name of Jesus and You will do it. Lord, I pray that you would give me the discernment to see where You are at work and the boldness to join You in what You are doing. Help me not to be a talker but a doer. I pray this in Jesus' Name. Amen
